Course Description

The course offers an opportunity to the student to acquire and develop rhetorical knowledge and practices for studying and writing within discipline-specific contexts. Specifically, the student identifies general features of academic writing, using mainly the genre approach, some key linguistic/rhetorical theories, and concepts underpinning academic writing. The final part of the course will focus on other practical issues in research writing and publishing.

Course Description

A candidate who chooses to write a thesis shall prepare, in consultation with a supervisor, a proposal in an area of specialization and present the proposal orally in a departmental seminar prior to commencement of the research. The proposal, if approved for suitability, shall form the basis for the thesis, which shall be undertaken during the third and fourth semester of the study. Once the proposal has been accepted, the candidate shall be assigned supervisor(s) who will follow the University of Cape Coast guidelines for supervision of the thesis. At the end of the research the candidate, will write and submit a thesis report for examination in accordance with the University of Cape Coast regulations.

The course also examines the mechanics of developing budgets, which include how to collect, compile and prioritize financial data. Other key issues that will enable one make informed sound financial decisions and manage a budget will be reviewed.

Course Description

The programme offers students the opportunity to have six weeks attachment to an educational institution that will offer them the required experience. The student will work with a mentor/supervisor at the selected educational institution who will send a report on the student’s activities and performance to the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA). IEPA staff who will visit the institution where the internship is being done shall monitor students. Students are also expected to write a report of their experiences as well as make a presentation to fellow students and Senior Members of IEPA on the completion of the internship programme.

It offers an overview of legislative, executive, and judicial action pertaining to education with a focus on: the rights of students; the rights of educational personnel; the responsibilities of school and state agency officials; gender equity and sexual harassment; legal problems of religious and private schools; legal aspects of the formulation of policy in schools; complementary methods for examining legal issues in education; and recent developments in education law. This course also offers a survey of statutes, acts, etc. relating to education. It also equips students with an understanding of how law affects the school environment and emphasizes the application of legal concepts to situations typically found in educational settings.

In this course, students will be introduced to the key features of qualitative data analysis, contrasted with quantitative data analysis. Here, students will be led to discuss qualitative data analysis as an art. Key techniques of qualitative data analysis such as documentation, conceptualization, memoing, transcribing, coding, categorizing, examining relationship and reflexivity will be explored. Moreover, students will be introduced to the use of computer applications such as Transana and NVIVO for managing qualitative data. Presentation of qualitative data and ethical considerations in qualitative data analysis will also be explored.
